Was a “Prehistoric Animal” Washed Ashore on Sakhalin?

Photos and videos showing the remains of a strange marine creature allegedly discovered on the coast of Russia’s Sakhalin Island have once again been circulating on social media and various websites. The posts claim that the carcass could be a “prehistoric creature,” an “animal from the age of dinosaurs,” or even an “unknown species that scientists cannot identify.”

At first glance, the remains do appear unusual and unlike most marine animals. Long hair-like structures, an oddly shaped head, and a thick layer of fatty tissue led many internet users to speculate that the carcass belonged to something extraordinary rather than a known marine species.

However, available evidence does not support those claims. The images in question originate from a real incident that occurred in 2015 near the town of Shakhtersk in Russia’s Sakhalin Region, where the remains of a large marine animal washed ashore. Photographs taken by visitors quickly spread online and sparked widespread speculation. Because of the creature’s unusual appearance, some people suggested it might be a sea monster, an unknown whale species, or even a surviving prehistoric animal.

Several media outlets reported that experts were initially unable to immediately determine the exact species. As a result, numerous theories and sensational claims began circulating on the internet.

Later, specialists from the Sakhalin Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography examined the remains. According to their assessment, the carcass most likely belonged to a juvenile Baird’s beaked whale (Berardius bairdii), a large marine mammal from the beaked whale family that inhabits the North Pacific Ocean.

The researchers noted that the remains were severely decomposed, making a definitive identification difficult. Nevertheless, they expressed approximately 90–95 percent confidence that the carcass belonged to a juvenile Baird’s beaked whale. According to the experts, the unusual features observed in the remains were not evidence of a new or unknown species. Instead, they were the result of prolonged exposure to seawater and natural decomposition processes.

When marine animals die and remain in the water for extended periods, significant biological and chemical changes occur. Experts explain that:

  • Soft tissues begin to decompose;

  • Layers of skin detach from the body;

  • Fat deposits become exposed;

  • Muscles and skeletal structures become distorted;

  • The body swells and loses its original shape.

As a result, animal remains can look dramatically different from how the creature appeared when alive. The Sakhalin carcass appears to be a clear example of this process. Some observers interpreted parts of the remains as hair or fur, but experts suggested these structures were likely decomposing skin and connective tissues.

Social media posts have also claimed that the carcass could be a creature dating back to the age of dinosaurs. However, there is no scientific evidence supporting this theory.

First, the available data indicate that the remains belong to a modern marine mammal.

Second, none of the scientists who examined the carcass concluded that it was a dinosaur, a prehistoric animal, or an unknown biological species.

Third, the identification of a new species requires extensive scientific analysis, including genetic testing, morphological examination, and other laboratory studies. No such research has suggested that the Sakhalin remains belonged to a prehistoric creature.

Unusual discoveries often attract public attention, especially when accompanied by sensational headlines such as “Mysterious Creature Found,” “Dinosaur Discovered,” or “Scientists Baffled.” While such claims spread rapidly online, they should be evaluated against scientific evidence and expert assessments.

The remains found on Sakhalin’s coast were indeed unusual in appearance. However, the available scientific evidence does not indicate that they belonged to a prehistoric creature or a dinosaur.

Experts believe the carcass most likely belonged to a juvenile Baird’s beaked whale (Berardius bairdii), and its strange appearance can be explained by natural decomposition and prolonged exposure to seawater.
